About
Bill Muirhead (b. 1951) was born outside of Chicago. He now lives in Guatemala, where he has exhibited his photographs locally, as well as in Florence, Italy. In addition, he has written articles about the culture of breastfeeding in Guatemala for La Leche League International’s magazine “Breastfeeding Today.”
Bill came from rural Illinois to the Lake Atitlán region in 2004 with a keen interest in the daily lives, labor, farming practices, and customs of the Maya who live there. His photos record the lives of Lake Atitlán residents from virtually every town in the surrounding area. Bill published his early photographs in 2012 in the book “The Lords of Atitlán” (https://www.blurb.com/b/1997972). Broken down into themes relevant to highland life, “The Lords of Atitlán” honors a great people: the Maya.
With time, Bill´s desire to know Guatemala better, drove him further afield. He receives many invitations to cultural events, especially activities with the indigenous queens. Thus Bill has had the opportunity to meet and photograph people from throughout the Republic. His updated version of lordsofatitlan.com therefore exhibits a broadened scope of this scenically and culturally diverse country.
